Designs that "Wow"...

My fascination with movie posters began as a young girl.  Movie posters are portrait ads used to promote awareness of a movie's release date.  Designers use a wide range of methods to represent the theme associated with a movie.  There are seven main genres of movies; action, adventure, drama, comedy, horror, thriller, and science fiction.  The poster must represent these themes visually to give consumers an idea of what to expect.

Precious:  A drama about a broken family and a girl who struggles to find her purpose in life.  The image displays a silhouette of the main character.  The hand represents an emerging individual from low and unfortunate circumstances.

For Colored Girls:  This is a drama film.  The poster supports the movie's theme of colors.  Each character in this movie is represented by a color or mood.  The poster places each characters in their respective color.

Inception:  A science fiction-action film.  The typography used in this poster is related to the theme as an all inclusive vision of things within the mind.  The buildings are aligned to represent letters in the movie title.

Tangled:  This is a children's film.  The golden blonde hair with emerging faces suggests this movie is about extremely long hair.

Up:  This is a children's adventure film.  The character is seen holding onto a garden hose hanging from something above him.  The clouds let us know he is airborne.  This provides a mystery as to what is holding him 'up'.

Black Swan:  This is a horror film.  The image shows several dancers posing to create a swan's body.  Consumers immediately know this is about dancing.  However, this is not a clear indicator of the horror associated with the film.

Dev. D:  I've never seen this film.  Wikipedia says it’s an Indian love story.  The distressed typeface suggests there is some drama associated with the lovers in this story.  The split image profiles suggest there is a love story.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid:  This is a children's comedy-drama.  The typography shown as handwritten "Wimpy Kid" suggests a narrative storyline.  The drawings that represent the shadows of the characters also speak to the idea that this is a narrative.

Why Did I Get Married Too? - This movie is a comedy-drama.  The poster represents the two perspectives on marriage.  This is also a common theme throughout the film. 

The Shaggy Dog:  This is a children's adventure-drama film.  The image of the shaggy dog is modified with human eyes.  This tells the child that a person has become a dog.  It also creates a mystery as to how this happen.  Children are the target audience here, and this poster gives them just enough information to want to see more.

Avengers:  This is an action/adventure movie.  The typography of the word "Avengers" is bold and provides a sense that the characters are prepared for battle.  The arrow gives the impression these characters are on a mission to avenge or take something back that was lost.

Expendables:  This is an action/adventure movie.  The guns and knives shown as wings assures consumers of an action packed experience.  The skull provides a sense that the characters are tough and rebellious.
